The incredible Cartier exhibition at the Jumex Museum 2023

The Cartier watch and jewelry firm was founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier in Paris, France. He was an innovative watchmaker and soon his business began to attract the aristocracy and members of royalty, including the Russian imperial family, who commissioned numerous pieces from him over the years.

In 1899, Cartier’s son, Louis, transformed the family business into a joint-stock company under the name “Cartier Firm”. The firm began exporting its products around the world in 1904 after opening a branch in London. In the following years he expanded to New York and opened his first boutiques in St. Petersburg and Tokyo.

Since the 1920s, Cartier has become the preferred jewelry purveyor of the rich and famous. Celebrities like the Duchess of Windsor, Queen Elizabeth or Elizabeth Taylor, adorned their necks with Cartier necklaces. This era also saw the introduction of famous Cartier jewelry lines such as “Cravache”, “Torsade de Cartier” and “Trinity de Cartier”.

Throughout the remainder of the 20th century, the Maison expanded its product line and opened boutiques around the world. Today, Cartier remains one of the most prestigious names in jewelry and watchmaking, with customers around the world enjoying its exquisite creations.

Cartier Design, a living legacy

From March 15 to May 14, we have the opportunity in Mexico to admire the exhibition “Cartier Design: A Living Legacy” presented at the Museo Jumex and which takes us on a journey through the history of one of the most prestigious jewelry houses in the world. The tour of the exhibition allows you to discover the different styles and trends of the house, from Art Deco, to the contemporary style, passing through the classic style and the vintage style.

In this exhibition, visitors can discover and admire unique jewelery and watches. Cartier Design: A Living Legacy, without a doubt, is an ideal occasion for lovers of luxury to discover the secrets of the French brand. The exhibition, which brings together more than 160 mythical pieces from the Cartier Collection, as well as from private collections and archival documents, invites the public to delve into the evolution of the Cartier style, the distinctive language of the House, its design and its savoir- faire.

The history of the Cartier Collection began almost 50 years ago, when the Maison embarked on a mission to recover iconic pieces signed by Cartier. In 1983, the Cartier Collection was born, a reflection of its cultural legacy and its rich history. With a selection that dates back to the 1850s and into the 21st century, this collection has seen and participated in history, with pieces made exclusively for royalty, high society and celebrities such as María Félix and Barbara Hutton. Today, the Cartier Collection continues to grow and has more than 3,000 pieces.

This exhibition marks the return of the Cartier Collection to Mexico, 24 years after its first presentation at the Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes. In recent years, the collection has visited museums such as the National Art Center in Tokyo, the Grand Palais in Paris, the Design Museum in London, and the Dallas Museum of Art.
