The Paris 2024 Olympic Village: From Temporary Refuge to a Sustainable Housing Model

The transformation of the Paris 2024 Olympic Village has set a milestone in urban redevelopment. Unlike many Olympic villages that fall into abandonment, this development has evolved into a modern and sustainable residential complex.

An Architectural and Urban Legacy

Almost a year after the Olympic Games, the Olympic Village, which hosted more than 6,000 athletes, has become a vibrant sustainable neighborhood. Similar to the Mexico 1968 Olympic Village, this project demonstrates how architecture can transcend the sporting event and leave a lasting impact on the city.

Located in northern Paris, the complex spans 52 hectares and was designed with a dual function: first as temporary accommodation during the Games and then as an integrated urban development. With 80 buildings ranging from 4 to 15 stories high, it now houses over 6,000 residents and includes commercial, educational, and recreational spaces.

Innovative Design and BIM Technology

The transition from Olympic Village to a functional community was an architectural challenge. Seven architectural firms collaborated on its design using Archicad, an advanced BIM tool, to plan each phase. "Archicad allowed us to seamlessly integrate both phases: the Olympic and the legacy phase," explains Alexis Charlot-Etienne, architect at CoBe Architecture & Paysage.

Commitment to Sustainability

From its conception, the Olympic Village was designed under high energy efficiency standards. Its structure combines wood and low-carbon concrete, a method that has also been implemented in sustainable housing projects in Mexico. "We have emphasized the use of visible wooden beams in the ceilings to give a warm and distinctive touch to the apartments," says Aurélian Delchet, founder of Atelier Georges.

The complex operates with 100% renewable energy, incorporating solar panels, water collection systems, air purifiers, and geothermal heating. This trend of sustainable housing has also gained traction in Mexico, with examples like Ciudad Universitaria and Parque La Mexicana.

A Model for Future Cities

The success of the Paris 2024 Olympic Village establishes a benchmark in sustainable urban development. Beyond sports, this project demonstrates that proper planning can transform temporary infrastructure into vibrant and functional communities, inspiring the future of cities in Mexico and around the world.
