Puerto Vallarta: 106 Years of History, Tourism, and Transformation

Puerto Vallarta is not only celebrating its anniversary as a city and municipality, but also reflecting on its impressive journey of growth—from a small fishing settlement to one of Mexico’s most dynamic tourist destinations.

From Las Peñas to Puerto Vallarta: The City’s Origins

Puerto Vallarta's story began in the mid-19th century as Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe, founded by merchants and fishermen. Its strategic location on Banderas Bay made it a key hub for trading agricultural and mining products from the region.

In 1918, the State Congress of Jalisco elevated Las Peñas to the status of municipality, renaming it Puerto Vallarta in honor of then-Governor Ignacio L. Vallarta. Half a century later, in 1968, it was granted city status, solidifying its political standing and ushering in an era of unprecedented urban and tourism development.

Key Moments in Its Development

Agriculture, Mining, and Trade (19th century – early 20th century)

Corn, beans, and mining fueled the region’s initial economic development. Its natural port facilitated the export of goods to other markets.

The Turning Point: Hollywood Discovers Vallarta

In 1963, the filming of The Night of the Iguana, directed by John Huston and starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, forever changed the port’s destiny. The international media attention positioned Puerto Vallarta as an emerging tourist hotspot.

Tourism Infrastructure: Foundations for Growth

Starting in the 1960s, the construction of the international airport, highways, and new hotel developments—such as Marina Vallarta—multiplied its capacity to welcome visitors.

Tourism Diversification and New Markets

In the following decades, Puerto Vallarta Puerto Vallarta diversified its offerings to attract adventure tourism, ecotourism, romance, weddings, wellness, and in recent years, has become one of Mexico’s leading LGBTQ+ destinations.

From Coastal Town to International Tourist City

Population growth has been remarkable. From just a few thousand inhabitants in the early 20th century, it now exceeds 300,000 residents, not counting the fluctuating tourist population. This boom has generated wealth and employment, but also significant challenges in infrastructure, public services, and urban planning.

Puerto Vallarta’s Current Challenges

At 106 years as a municipality, the city faces new challenges that will shape its future:

  • Sustainable tourism: Protecting beaches, jungles, and marine life; promoting ecotourism.
  • Economic diversification: New tourism segments (cultural, gastronomic, wellness, conferences, and conventions).
  • Infrastructure and connectivity: Modernizing the airport and roadways.
  • Preserving local identity: Protecting the historic center, architecture, traditions, and folk art.
  • Equitable social development: Strengthening programs in healthcare, education, and housing for the local population.
  • Sustainable urban planning: Managing waste, water access, mobility, and orderly growth.
  • Safety and coexistence: Ensuring well-being for both residents and visitors.

An Anniversary to Look Toward the Future

The commemoration of Puerto Vallarta is much more than a historical celebration. It’s an opportunity to reflect on its transformation and how to address future challenges without losing its essence: the warmth of its people, the richness of its landscape, and the cosmopolitan spirit that defines it.
