After more than fifty years, Michael Heizer, the American artist known for his large-scale works, has just opened his extraordinary installation called City to the public.
City is a monumental work of art by Heizer in the Nevada desert, 3 hours north of Las Vegas. It is made up of more than fifty stone, earth and concrete structures in geometric shapes, mounds and trenches, and extends for more than two square kilometers.
The work began in 1972 and has become one of the most ambitious and most famous works of the artist, because not only was the time long, but it required an immense effort and 40 million dollars. Heizer used modern engineering techniques, such as 3D geography, to design the work. This is meant to be a spiritual experience, as visitors can explore its buildings and spaces, experience nature, and connect with the past.
The site can only be accessed by helicopter, as the nearest road is several miles away. The artwork is meant to be experienced in person and its scale and distance from civilization is an integral part of its concept. Heizer’s work is often seen as a reflection of his own exploration of the desert and the grandeur of nature that can be experienced there.
To get to know such a unique space, you have to pay $150 and be part of a group of six people, which is the number of visitors allowed per day. You can’t take photos and there are no restrooms. Without a doubt, visiting the City is a very different experience.
