Puerto Vallarta Botanical Garden: Nature, Science, and Living Culture

Just 24 kilometers south of Puerto Vallarta, near Las Juntas and Los Veranos, the Vallarta Botanical Garden stands as one of the region’s most important spaces for environmental conservation. This iconic site not only protects the biodiversity of the Sierra Madre Occidental, but also promotes environmental education, sustainable tourism, and local pride in the natural heritage of Jalisco.

The Vision That Started It All

The garden was founded in 2004 thanks to the efforts of Robert Price, a passionate botanist concerned about regional deforestation. Determined to create a space that would conserve and celebrate native flora, he—supported by a dedicated team and a community of volunteers—transformed this vision into a nonprofit organization with international recognition.

Conservation, Science, and Environmental Education

The Vallarta Botanical Garden is far more than a tourist attraction. It operates as a nonprofit organization focused on three core pillars:

  • Active Conservation:Home to thousands of native Mexican plant species, including one of the largest orchid collections in the country. It also protects agaves, bromeliads, and other endangered flora.
  • Scientific Research:The garden collaborates with universities and academic institutions to study local plant life, generating valuable data for science and conservation strategies.
  • Environmental Education:Through workshops, guided tours, and school programs, the garden promotes environmental awareness across all age groups.

A Place to Reconnect with Nature

The garden also offers peaceful trails, panoramic views, and spaces for relaxation and contemplation. Its proximity to the Los Horcones River allows visitors to enjoy a natural swim in crystal-clear waters surrounded by tropical jungle—turning a simple visit into a multisensory experience that combines wellness and environmental learning.

More Than Plants: Social and Economic Impact

The Vallarta Botanical Garden creates tangible benefits for the region:

  • Sustainable Tourism:It attracts visitors who value nature and conservation.
  • Local Employment:Generates both direct and indirect jobs for nearby communities.
  • Environmental Awareness:Encourages ecosystem respect and strengthens regional identity.

Botanical Culture and Living Memory

Every corner of the garden tells a story about the relationship between people and plants. From orchids revered for their medicinal uses to the agaves that give us tequila, the garden celebrates the ancestral legacy of Mexican botany. It is a living museum, where nature and culture are deeply intertwined.
