A home and a workshop: the history of the House of Rembrandt
Rembrandt House, located in the heart of Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter, was the home and studio of the celebrated Dutch painter for 22 years, from 1639 until shortly before his death in 1669, when he had to sell it to pay off his numerous debts. During this time, Rembrandt created some of his most famous works, such as "The Anatomy Lesson," "The Slaughtered Ox," and countless portraits of his clients who came to be immortalized by the great master.
The house was sold and passed through several hands. By the end of the 19th century, the house was in a state of neglect and was scheduled for demolition. However, thanks to the intervention of a group of citizens and artists, the house was acquired by the city of Amsterdam in 1911.
A Museum Dedicated to the Genius
After an extensive restoration, the Rembrandt House opened its doors to the public as a museum in 1916. Since then, the museum has undergone several renovations and expansions, always with the aim of preserving the authenticity of the house and offering visitors an experience as close as possible to the time when Rembrandt lived and worked.
Touring the House
Upon entering Rembrandt House, we find ourselves in a space full of history and charm. The house retains its original 17th-century structure, with its red brick walls, wooden beams, and stone floors.
