David Chipperfield is the British architect who has been awarded this year with the most prestigious architecture prize in the world, the Pritzker. Linked to the minimalist current, he specializes in buildings of cultural interest, shopping centers, museums and homes, as well as furniture and interiors.
His work is characterized by its ability to reflect the historical characteristics of the environments in which he works. He focuses on creating human environments with a humanistic attitude to design through architecture and public space.
Chipperfield’s position is clear: “Finding beauty in normality seems to me to be a profound position and something very modern and different from what our contemporary society is doing, which is feeding the hunger for novelty. I have not lost my confidence in architecture itself, we make a physically better world, we make a better world in general. I’ve always held on to that.”
Chipperfield began his career with a number of projects in Germany, including the famous Bauhaus Museum in Weimar in 1997. Some of the most notable recent projects are the reconstruction, restoration and expansion of the Prado Museum in Madrid and the expansion of the National Gallery of London. He also contributed to the project to reopen the Statue of Liberty in Paris.
In the commercial sphere, Chipperfield remodeled The Mall of Berlin shopping center. Other notable projects of his career include the reopening of Rothschild Bank’s New Court in London; the Neues Museum in Berlin, which is an extraordinary architectural work; and the Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris.
In Mexico City, one of Chipperfield’s great architectural works is the Museo Jumex. A space that, by the way, from March 15 to May 14 presents an extraordinary exhibition Cartier Design: A Living Legacy, an exhibition that traces the history of the Maison through a selection of its most important jewels.
David Chipperfield has also received a number of awards and recognitions, including the Pritzker Prize, the RIBA Stirling Prize and the Europa Nostra Prize, which have recognized his extraordinary contribution to architecture.
