Discover Shi Cheng: A City Submerged in Time

The Origin and Sacrifice of Shi Cheng
Shicheng City was built between 25 AD and 200 AD, during the Han Dynasty. Unlike most Chinese walled cities, which had four entrance gates, Shicheng had five, a unique feature that reflected its strategic importance and exceptional design.
However, in 1959, the Chinese government chose to prioritize progress over historical preservation. Under the leadership of Mao Zedong, it was decided to flood the city in order to build a dam that would supply water to the region and symbolize the advancement of the country. This monumental project required the relocation of over 300,000 people and the construction of structures capable of withstanding the immense water pressure.
Qiandao Lake and the Preservation of Shicheng
The result was Qiandao Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, with over a thousand islands formed by submerged mountain peaks. Interestingly, the flood acted as a natural preservation mechanism. Shicheng's stone structures, including its streets and buildings, remained in excellent condition underwater, protected from erosion.
A Discovery That Fascinates the World
Forgotten for decades, the city was rediscovered in 2001 by a team of divers who were amazed by its state of preservation. Cobblestone streets, ornate temples and wooden buildings remain virtually intact, protected by the lake's deep, oxygen-free waters.
Today, visitors and researchers can marvel at the city's artistic details, such as the vibrant carvings of dragons, phoenixes and lions that adorn its structures. Because of its state of preservation and fascinating history, Shicheng is often called the “Chinese Atlantis.” However, unlike the mythical Atlantis, Shicheng is a tangible piece of history that can be explored.
